BIOE 2540 - Neural Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering

Instructor: Cui

Credits:

Term:

Description: This course is designed to acquaint students with a understanding of biomaterials and biocompatibility of various neural implants while also discussing current approaches and theories in neural tissue engineering research.

Prerequisites: BioE 1810 or 2810 or equivalent courses in biomaterial and tissue engineering

Required Texts: Course handout

Course Objectives:

  1. Be familiar with the general types of materials used in neural prosthesis, drug delivery devices, and neural tissue engineering scaffold
  2. Understand the biological processes that occur when artificial materials are in contact with the biological tissue, particularly neural tissue
  3. Be familiar with the biocompatibility issues relevant to a variety of neural implantable devices and the current strategies to solve these issues
  4. Understand the current cell-based approaches for neural tissue repair and regeneration
  5. Be able to critically read and review the literature in the field of neural biomaterials and tissue engineering and have developed their abilities to digest, organize, and effectively present technical material to a group of their peers

Topics Covered:

  1. Basic material science
  2. Neural tissue biocompatibility with implant
  3. BBB and CNS drug delivery
  4. Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine for PNS
  5. Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine for CNS
  6. Neural electrode/tissue interface (including both simulating and recording electrodes, both peripheral and cortical neural interface)

Approach: The course will meet once a week with alternate meetings between lecture and discussion. An overview lecture on a particular topic will be given at one meeting and at the next meeting the class will discuss research articles selected on the previous meeting's topic.

Mechanics: This course will have no exams. Grading policy: Class discussion 20%, presentation 25%, quizzes 20% and final report 35%

Class/Labratory Schedule: Tuesdays, 2-4:40, BioE conference room, 5th floor, BST3

Syllabus: 2540 Syllabus (MS Word Format)
