Professional Interests
Dr. Patzer's research involves the application of reaction engineering, transport phenomena, electrochemistry, and metabolic catalysis to biomedical approaches to internal organ regeneration and function replacement. His primary research interests are in the development (laboratory, preclinical, and clinical) of metabolic artificial organs, primarily liver, kidney, and pancreas.
Following several years of industrial experience with Gulf Research & Development Company, Dr Patzer joined the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh where he collaborated in development of a portable artificial kidney and implantable glucose sensors. He then transferred to the Department of Surgery after establishing a basic research, preclinical, and clinical program in bioartificial liver assist devices that encompasses researchers and clinicians from several departments collaborating to bring novel approaches for treatment of liver failure to clinical evaluation. Of particular note is an extramural collaboration on design and development of a bioartificial liver based upon porcine hepatocytes that Dr Patzer guided from concept through large animal preclinical evaluation and into clinical Phase I evaluation in less than three years (with FDA and IRB approval).
Most recently, Dr Patzer has joined the Department of Bioengineering where he continues to work in the area of liver support with projects on the use of binding agents to promote removal of liver toxins in acute liver failure; mitigation of transplant associated reperfusion injury; metabolic liver support in split liver transplantation; and inference of intracranial pressure elevation from transcranial doppler ultrasound. He is also collaborating with investigators from the McGowan Institute to develop novel cell-based approaches to skin regeneration.
