Introduction
The University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University have established, through funding from the National Institutes of Health, a cross-disciplinary biotechnology training program (BTP) which combines the strengths of two institutions. Funded Fellowships are now available in the broad areas of Gene delivery/therapy, Bio-processing & Biomolecular Engineering of viral vectors, DNA, and proteins, Cellular and Metabolic Engineering, Bioseparation, and other related areas offered by program faculty at both institutions.
Program Objectives
- To substantially enhance engineering student’s comprehension of biological sciences
- To provide training to life science students in biotechnology & bioprocess engineering.
- To provide a distinctive experience to the students in the area of biotechnology that is not currently available at either university.
Opportunities
Student trainees will have the opportunity to choose from among many diverse research projects offered by the faculty of both institutions, but it is anticipated the majority of the projects will focus in the following three broad areas
- Gene therapy and bioprocessing of viral vectors
- Biomaterial and tissue engineering
- Metabolic engineering.
- Cellular and Biomolecular Engineering
Other training program attributes include industrial internships of three-month duration, program symposia, participation in journal clubs and seminars in the area of biotechnology and a final seminar for students near the completion of their research.
