Graduate MS Practicing Engineer

overview

For individuals working full time in the Pittsburgh area, the department offers a Master of Science program on a part-time basis in the evening. The program consists of 30 course credit hours and a thesis is not required. It differs from the regular MS program in three important respects.

  1. Admission to the program is generally limited to engineers working full-time outside the University in chemical engineering or related work.
  2. Course work replaces the MS thesis requirement and the seminar requirement.
  3. The student completes a 3-credit special project course, ChE 2910, during their last term in the program.  This course could be satisfied, for example, by a project with a faculty member, or a project based on their professional work for which a faculty member agrees to serve as advisor.  Submission of a term paper, which is completed under the advisement of a member of the faculty, is required.

Requirements

A minimum of 30 credit hours of course work is required. These must include the five courses listed below:

  • CHE 2301: FUNDAMENTALS OF TRANSPORT PROCESSES, (4 CREDITS)
  • CHE 2101: FUNDAMENTALS OF THERMODYNAMICS, (3 CREDITS)
  • CHE 2201: FUNDAMENTALS OF REACTION PROCESSES, (3 CREDITS)
  • CHE 2410: CHE MATH COURSE, (3 CREDITS)
  • CHE 2910 SPECIAL PROJECTS (3 CREDITS)

The remainder of the course work should be selected from graduate offerings in chemical engineering. Up to six credit hours may be elected in approved graduate course offerings outside the department.

Students who wish to enter this program should first apply for admission to graduate study in chemical engineering. Once admitted they can then request admission to the Practicing Engineer Program.
