Undergraduate Curriculum

Pillar Topics

The fundamental engineering science of the discipline has been broken down into 6 integrated units, which we call Pillar course. Each course comprises several different -- but complementary -- traditional topics. In this way, we can integrate Chemical Engineering knowledge in a way not possible in a traditional curriculum and, ultimately, more closely mimic the success exhibited by integrated Freshman Engineering programs.

The following Pillars have been proposed and are currently being developed:

  • CHE 0100 - Foundations of Chemical Engineering: Combines topics from traditional Mass/Energy Balances courses with Thermodynamics and Staged Separations.
  • CHE 0200 - Thermodynamics: Combines topics from both the traditional "single-phase" and "chemical equilibrium" Thermodynamics courses.
  • CHE 0300 - Transport Phenomena: Combines all three modes of Chemical Engineering Transport Phenomena into one monolithic course.
  • CHE 0400 - Reactive Process Engineering: Combines topics from traditional Separations with Kinetics and Reactor Design.
  • CHE 0500 - Systems and Dynamics: This course expands the basic material from a traditional Process Control course and is strongly integrated with Design.
  • CHE 0600 - Design: This course expands the basic material from a traditional Process Design course, yet adds a Product Design component, and is strongly integrated with Systems and Dynamics.

Dedicated in 1971, Benedum Hall is home to exploration and discovery.
