Environmental Engineering Laboratory

The Environmental Engineering Laboratory provides research and analytical capabilities in environmental science and engineering for wastewater treatment, water resource protection and development, industrial waste, toxic and hazardous waste management, and remedial action.

The facility consists of about 10,000 square feet of space, divided into individual laboratories which contain computers, as well as equipment for standard chemical and instrumental environmental analyses including: a Hewlett Packard GC/Mass Spectrometer, Hewlett Packard Gas Chromatographs with PID/ECD and FID/ECD detectors, Perkin Elmer Gas Chromatographs with FID and ECD detectors, and Tekmar purge and trap capabilities, Perkin Elmer GC with Thermal Conductivity detector, Dionex 4500 Ion Chromatograph with conductivity detector, Varian 5000 Series HPLC, Beckman and Ionics TOC Analyzers, Perkin Elmer 1100B atomic absorption spectrophotometer for flame and graphite furnace analysis, Perkin Elmer Lambda-2 UV/visible scanning spectrophotometer, Bausch & Lomb B&L Spec-20 spectrophotometers, assorted specific ion probes, Coulter Particle Counter, Microtox toxicity analyzer, computerized aerobic respirometer, and routine supporting instrumentation.

Industry Collaboration

The Environmental Engineering Laboratory collaborates with the Dominion Environment & Energy Center, with faculty of the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, the Graduate School of Public Health in assessment of health effects, mutagenicity and toxicity potential studies, and with non-University entities for joint activity in environmental science and technology developments.

Research rankings

Pitt ranks 10th in National Science Foundation Rankings for research funding.
