Research Sustainability & Green Design Facilities & Centers

Within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Sustainability and Green Design Research group has access to world class educational and computing facilities and is part of several important initiatives and centers within the University.

Mascaro Sustainability Initiative (MSI)

The SGD group is affiliated with MSI, which promotes sustainability education and research throughout the School of Engineering. SGD will be housed in the soon-to-be constructed MSI addition to Benedum hall with state-of-the-art lab, lecture, and office space for faculty and students!

Center For Sustainable Transportation Infrastructure

The SGD group is also affiliated with CSTI, as Melissa Bilec serves as its co-director. CSTI was formed to expand on the successful research and education collaboration between the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the CEE Department. Through an Intergovernmental Agreement between Pitt and PennDOT CSTI activities and research are supported with up to $25 million dollars over five years.

Pittsburgh's Hot Metal Bridge

This project, the Hot Metal Pedestrian Bridge, is one example of a sustainable transportation infrastructure project, where an old structure is transformed to new use.
