________________________________________________________ 2009 CO-OP STUDENT OF THE YEAR It is with great pleasure that we announce Patrick Vescovi, Triple Major in Chemical engineering, Bioengineering, and Chemistry as the University of Pittsburgh’s 2009 Co-op Student of the Year. Patrick will go on to compete for the national honor of Co-op Student of the Year. Patrick Vescovi joined the co-op program in the fall of 2006 and accepted a chemical engineering co-op position with Sabic Plastics in Waterford, NY where he did two rotations. In his experience with Sabic, he helped design a piping route that helped save the company $240,000 per year, he helped eliminate explosion hazards while reducing yield losses, and additionally he was able to participate in several training regimes that are usually reserved for full-time engineers. For Patrick’s third rotation, he worked with Dr. Steven Little in tissue engineering and bone regeneration at the University of Pittsburgh. Patrick was able to complete a most diverse co-op, which reflected his varied interests and skills. At Pitt, Patrick has served as a freshman mentor, teaching assistant, member of the Lambda Sigma Service Society, and a 2009 Goldwater Scholarship Honorable Mention. Patrick is also the founding father of the Pitt chapter of Phi Delta Theta Penn Iota, which is a fraternity that is alcohol-free and anti-hazing. Outside of the classroom, Patrick visits elederly at a local hospital every Sunday; he is active in “Saturday Science” and helps Dr. Bandik of the Chemistry Department in his work with underprivileged youth. Patrick also returns to his hometown, and gives motivational talks to current high school students. In the future, Patrick plans to obtain an M.D./Ph.D. dual degree through the medical scientist training program and wants to utilize his knowledge to better translate research to the clinical setting.
