Curriculum Vitae

Joseph H. Magill, Emeritus Professor, MEMS, DSc. 1990, PhD, Queen's University, Belfast, 1956; D.I.C. 1957, Imperial College of Science & Technology, London, UK. Dr. Magill joined the department as Associate Professor in 1968, became Professor in 1975, and later added the titles of Adjunct Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering in 1980. As an undergraduate at Queen's University, Magill was awarded a Foundation Scholarship in 1951 and 1952.

Dr. Magill has considerable industrial and academic experience with Chemstrand Corporation (Monsanto) and Imperial Chemical Industries, U.K.. On the academic side, he spent almost two years as a Research Associate in the Department of Chemical engineering and Applied Thermodynamics at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, U.K.; four and one-half years as a Visitor and Research Fellow on polymer research at the Mellon Institute, Pittsburgh, Pa; has taught at several Institutions in the United Kingdom.

At the University of Pittsburgh, besides serving on a wide range of committees, he taught Graduate courses in Polymers dealing with such topics as (i) Morphology-Crystallization and Physical Properties; (ii) Polymer Stability and Degradation (including Flammability); (iii) Aspects of Polymer Processing; and Undergraduate courses in a) Polymerization; b) Materials Science of Materials; and c) X-ray Diffraction. He was also involved in research activities and has published extensively in all of these areas. At Pittsburgh he was instrumental in promoting polymers as multi-disciplinary and interdepartmental materials resource.

In 1974, he was awarded the Materials Engineering Citation for Excellence in Scholastic Achievement by Pitt. In 1975-76, he spent a sabbatical year on a Research Council Senior Fellowship at the H. H. Wills Physics Laboratory at the University of Bristol, U.K.. Later, in 1984-85, he was the recipient of the Alexander Von Humboldt Senior Research Award at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, University of Mainz, and at the Technical University, Hamburg-Harburg, Germany. In May, 1988 and June, 1989, he was a Visiting Professor, University of Yamagata, Japan. During 1991-1993, he served as ONR Liaison Scientist in Materials Science (Polymer Speciality) at the London Office, U.K..

Magill is a Fellow and Chartered Chemist of the Royal Society of Chemistry, London; Fellow of the American Physical Society; Member of the American Chemical Society and other scientific organizations in which he has played an active role in past years. He is listed in several Science and Engineering Bibliographies.

During his career, he has written/co-authored more than 200 papers, book chapters and patents, and has lectured nationally and internationally. He has served (past and present) as a Consultant. Now he continues with some research and writing amongst other duties in the Pittsburgh Community.
