Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Graduate Fellowships
The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science (MEMS) of the Swanson School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh has established a Graduate Fellowship Program with support from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The NRC Graduate Fellows will be enrolled in the PhD program in Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) to pursue dissertation research under the guidance of Professor Wiezorek. more
Graduate Student Awarded a Fellowship from NEUP
06/30/09 D. Tyler Landfried has been awarded a highly competitive graduate fellowship from the Nuclear Energy University Programs (NEUP), part of the Office of Nuclear Energy in the Department of Energy. Tyler received this award for his proposal to perform experimental research aimed at enabling reliable prediction of thermal fatigue loading in nuclear reactors. As part of the award, Tyler will receive funding for tuition as well as a monthly stipend for up to three years of his graduate work beginning the fall semester of 2009.
PhD Student Wins IEE New Product Idea Award
03/03/09 Rong Zhong, Ph.D. candidate, won third place in the New Product Idea category at the Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence Big Idea Networking and Awards Event. Her invention expedites the grinding of multiple samples for study with a Transmission Electron Microscope.

03/26/09 Micah Toll, sophomore mechanical engineering major, was recently featured by the U.S. Air Force Internet TV show, The Circuit. Toll was interviewed for his creation of a lightweight, patent-pending portable construction beam to be used in third world and refugee populations. Watch
