Director, Co-Op Education

Offering Career Options for Students

Maureen Barcic, director of the current Cooperative (Co-op) Education Program at the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering, has been leading the program since its re-establishment in 1987.

Maureen joined the Swanson School of Engineering to help restart the co-op program—one of the first three in the country—which had been inactive since the Depression Era. Under Maureen’s direction, the school’s program has grown tremendously. More than 2,700 students have participated in the program which, with very limited resources, she has built into one that is respected by employers and peers. Maureen works with more than 600 students and 200 companies each year. In addition to the program basics, Maureen has also initiated such features as the Employer of the Year and Co-Op Student of the Year Awards. In fact, the University of Pittsburgh Co-Op Student of the Year has been awarded the National Co-Op Student of the Year Award by the Cooperative Education Division of the American Society of Engineering Education and the Cooperative Education and Internship Association two of the past four years, and came in fourth in the third year.

Students in each of the school’s nine undergraduate degree programs participate in the Co-op Program in addition to students from chemistry and computer science. Currently, 60 percent of School of Engineering students, including 61 percent of the honors students, participate in the Co-op Program.
