Shopping Ease with RFID

Tameka Hunter and her classmates have designed a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) checkout process that may someday come to a store near you.

With her team’s system, a customer can fill a shopping cart with consumer products and walk through the checkout line—no scanning necessary.

The RFID tags on each consumer item, which replace the barcode, would be scanned in one easy step and the final cost would appear almost immediately.

This early step in the research is being done in Benedum Hall. Tameka is completing the project for her senior design course in computer engineering.
