Who We Are

The Swanson Center for Micro and Nano Systems represents the University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering’s focus on applied research into micro and nano systems. This Center’s main objective is to carry out research that is of interest to our industrial members that will lead to development of new technology, education of graduate students and publication of results.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Swanson Center for Micro and Nano Systems is to conduct creative research and develop useful intellectual property and technology and facilitate the transfer of this intellectual property and technology to the industrial sector, specifically to Center industrial members.

Message from the Dean

Once again, John Swanson's generosity has allowed the School of Engineering to advance its educational and research initiatives and has provided essential resources for students, faculty, alumni, and industry. With the creation of the John A. Swanson Center for Micro and Nano Systems (SCMNS) and the John A. Swanson Institute for Technical Excellence (SITE), the School of Engineering places itself in the forefront of engineering research.

SCMNS provides outstanding opportunities for researchers at the School of Engineering to explore the world of micro and nano systems and offer this technology to Pitt Engineering Alumni and Pittsburgh industry. By combining the Swanson Center for Product Innovation and SCMNS, the School has designed SITE, one of the best Institutes for technology of its kind. I expect great things to come from the newly designed Institute and Center.

We look forward to your involvement in SCMNS as well. Membership offers a great way to join the School of Engineering as we advance technology and engineering. SITE will bring outstanding ideas and forward-thinking businesses to the School of Engineering and to Pittsburgh.
