Who We Are

The John A. Swanson Center for Product Innovation has been assisting industry and education since 1999.

The Center was designed to give industry and entrepreneurs access to the University's state-of-the-art product development technology through the consulting services of our talented students, world-class faculty and dedicated technical staff members. While students receive hands-on experience that spans all phases of product development, clients connect with a high quality, one-stop job shop that provides efficient turnaround for:

  • Product design
  • Rapid prototyping and reverse engineering
  • Plastic and injection molding applications
  • MEMS fabrication
  • Business development and marketing

Through its dedication to education and industry, the John A. Swanson Center for Product Innovation strives to be a vital force in the re-engineering and revitalization of the Pittsburgh region.

Mission Statement

Our mission at the John A. Swanson Center for Product Innovation is to be a unique workforce, rooted in a research and learning environment that is strongly connected with industry.

As the landscape of engineering design and product creation evolves, we will continue to address critical challenges within that landscape by using leading edge technology, and by meeting the needs of the regional manufacturing industry.

Message from the Dean

In April 2001, the John A. Swanson Center for Product Innovation (SCPI) opened its doors to educate students about product realization and to integrate industry into that education. Since its beginning, the Swanson Center has been an innovative resource for more than 120 industry projects and more than 50 different companies. We're proud it is a part of the University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering.

As technologies change, the Center has adapted as well. The SCPI, together with the Swanson Center for Micro and Nano Systems comprise the Swanson Institute for Technical Excellence. We continue to attract forward-thinking companies and bright research students

Looking ahead, we hope to continue to advance business, technology and research. The products and ideas realized in the SCPI are the foundation for a strong future. Please review the web site to learn more. We look forward to working with you.
